Concrete Heart

Concrete Heart

Inside the man-made ribcage

The city wakes up slowly
Sunlight trickles down roof shingles
Crisp air begins to thaw
Gray fades out into color
Vibrations of sound
Tremble through empty streets

Green light, yellow, red
It's like the city whispered
“Go”
Movement commences
Shoes click, shuffle and step
The city starts to dance

What the living organ needs
Pressure release
Hot air increase
The cash register chimes
Smells of coffee, breakfast food
Bagels and cream cheese

The empty streets yawn, stretch
Cars start to pace
Screeches like an animal
One second stutter
Before continuous chaos
Early morning music

The heart of the city
Not the middle
The mirror of noise
Alone, quiet, safe
Undisturbed in the hand
Of city's skeleton life

Metal in the earth
Unbroken morning light
Carved letters mark names
Fallen leaves cross concrete patterns
Shaking with vibrations of life
Echoing the heart beat

The heart of the city
