October Bells

October Bells

A sharp ring in a valley of cold
The chill echos through deaf hills
The deep blue, the gleaming white
No one hears and no one cares
Snow softly settling
Harsh against their skin
The bright blood seeping through
The wind rustles the chapel bells
The October song is played
Singing for the fallen
For the disarray
The souls escape, bodies decay
And everyone knows the story
Blood soaked land, a horrid place
No feet, no steps to spin the space
Still the sweet sounding bells increase
Hopeful that the sun will rise
But when it did it wasn’t joy
It was the fire burning fast
The snow had started melting
A season so very near
Everything was changing still
But hardly old enough to end
The fire struck, bearing fast
Creeping closer to the chapel halls
The bodies burning in bright blaze
Fire eating up its way
The wood started buckling, the cross started sweating
Under the heat, under pressure of surviving
Slowly the tower crumbles
And all that is left is gravity
The bells crash on the ground
Their innocent clangs, a horrid sound
October snow had been burned away
The souls escaped for another day
Wind had held its breath
The fire burning away all the bells had left
This isn’t a happy story
This doesn’t have a hero
This is where the light dies
This is the end.

  2. A ravaged northern landscape with a desolate church being swallowed by flames is what comes to mind. This leads me to ponder upon what inspired this, hmmm?

I admire the gravity of this piece. The dark blend of imagery, mixed with the disturbing tale, drag the reader into a swirl of dispair and loss. Oh, and I liked the subtle sacrilege, adds some noir and tasteful.

    One of your best.
